| Scenic and Lighting Designer Workshop Leader Reaching for the Heavens |

| Madeleine Sobota is an award-winning Scenic and
Lighting Designer, residing in Indianapolis Indiana, USA. Madeleine
studied design at Northwestern University and The Ohio State University,
and with Lester Polakov in New York. With over 125 designs to her
credit, Madeleine’s work includes designs for Indiana Repertory Theatre,
Dance Kaleidoscope, Susurrus, La Mirada, and the Contemporary American
Theatre Company, along with a number of colleges and universities. She
has taught design in theatre programs at University of the Arts London’s
Central St Martins College of Art and Design, The Ohio State University,
the University of Connecticut, Ohio University, Butler University, the
State University of New York at Buffalo, Kenyon College, and Loyola
University Chicago. She has created innovative work in traditional and
non-traditional theatre spaces. Most recently, her focus has been in
finding evocative spaces in which to create designer-lead site-specific
work. In 2005, she was awarded a Lilly Foundation 2005-2006 Creative
Renewal Fellowship to research site-specific design in London UK.
Madeleine’s designs have been featured in Kazimierz Braun’s Theatre
Directing: Art, Ethics, Creativity, in TD&T, Theatre Design and
Technology, in the USA National Design Exhibits at the 1999 and 2003
Prague Quadrennials, and in the World Stage Design Exhibition in
Toronto, March 2005. In Toronto, Madeleine was awarded the World Stage
Design 2005 Silver Medal in Lighting Design. Her work can be seen at
this Prague Quadrennial 2007 in the USA National Exhibit, which she
co-designed with fellow designer Nic Ularu.
