Since costume and set design study at VSMU, in Bratislava, former Czechoslovakia, 1970 – 72, Maija Pekkanen work continued as residence costume designer in Helsinki City Theatre, Finland. She has designed all kind of costumes for almost 200 productions, mainly for drama but also modern dance, musicals and operas and some set designs too. When possible she likes to use manipulated materials for her costume design. She taught Theatre Costume Design course at the University of Art and Design/ Department Fashion Design, Helsinki, from 1979 to 1997. She participated in several exhibitions in Finland and abroad like PQ -71 and PQ-87.She was the Jury member of the PQ-99. Maija Pekkanen is an OISTAT activist since 1975 and has served the organisation as EC member 1991 - 2000, Interim President 2000-2001 and President of OISTAT 2001 - 2005.
