A leading practising scenographer and an internationally recognised authority on the subject, Pamela Howard is increasingly recognised as a Director/Creator and writer. Her book “What is Scenography? “ (Routledge GB/USA 2002 ) is now translated into many languages. Professor Pamela Howard trained at Birmingham College of Art and at the Slade School of Fine Art, 1954-59. Between 1960 and 1971 worked extensively as a Designer at Nottingham Playhouse, Birmingham Repertory Theatre, the Unicorn Theatre for Young People.From 1971/9 study periods at the Théâtre National Populaire, Lyon, France. Professor Pamela Howard occupies an almost unique position as one of the very few practitioners in her field who, whilst continuing to work professionally in all forms of theatre has maintained a parallel career in education. Many designers working in the arena of international theatre and opera and film have studied with her. Professor Howard was Founder & Artistic Director of the European Scenography Centres, an International Masters Course in Scenography, based at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design in London, with centres in Utrecht, Prague, Helsinki, and Seville. She was Artistic Director of SCENOFEST, a ground breaking international annual festival held in a different city each year, and which is now integrated into the Prague Quadriennal. She continues to lecture internationally, is now Professor Emeritus of Central Saint Martins, and is a visiting professor at Royal Holloway College, University of London ,Tel Aviv University and a consultant to the University of the Arts in Belgrade. She is a frequent visitor to universities in the United States. She was National Commissioner for Great Britain for the Prague Quadriennale 1995, formerly Chair GB Education Commission of OISTAT, and a Founder Committee Member of the Linbury Prize for Stage Design.
