“Outside the Box”

Designing for Flexible and Found Spaces

Madeleine Sobota uses light as a primary component of both her scenic and lighting designs. She works in the scenographic tradition, transforming flexible spaces in eloquent and abstract ways. Her style has evolved to embrace sculptural images inspired by, and created with, authentic materials that include water, earth, sand, steel and glass. Her lighting, which is increasingly experimental, often uses actor-controlled light sources to create evocative images. Her interest in experimenting with light and space has led her to move outside of traditional theatre spaces. She has become passionate about exploring the potential and power of raw found spaces to inform the performance and the design.
