Sculpting with Light

Dilemmas in Lighting for Modeling Versus Lighting for Articulation of Space

Three-dimensional plastic modeling of the human figure depends on appropriate light-shade configuration. The choice of lighting angle is the main factor affecting this light-shade arrangement and consequently the modeling of the human figure.  Nevertheless a light carefully placed so as to achieve the desired plastic modeling may affect the look of surroundings of the performer in an undesirable way.  Ugly and uncalled-for patches of light may appear on the floor or on an adjacent scenic element.  Two approaches to deal with this problem present themselves: either we strive to separate these two functions of lighting, modeling and articulation of space; or we manage to integrate the two functions into one lighting solution.
