Scenic design for The Birds (BDA_US07) |
|||||
| Themes of destruction
and rebirth in The Birds drew me to devastation and resurrection of
cities and buildings around the world, chiefly old theatres. The
concept uses these themes and ideas in a found space (a condemned
theatre or closed warehouse) with structural and mobile scaffolding, a
crane, and constructed rubble to create an all inclusive
environment—including spectators in scaffolding. The actors are able to
direct all free structures each night to adapt to the performance as
fit. The focal structure on the “stage” rises from a hole for the
opening, when the characters are closer to Athens; and lower into the
ground when reaching towards the sky. Finally, the wall is depicted by
tension netting, strung by the actors out over the house. |
