| Of New Zealand Maori (Te Ati Awa
tribe) and English descent, Stevenson preceded her study of Performance
Design with awards in Fashion Design and Graphics, and a Diploma in
Computer Graphic Design at the National College of Design and Technology
(Wellington). Since moving into performance, her design skills have
contributed to productions of Samuel Beckett’s ‘End Game’, and a devised
collaboration called ‘Light Splashes’. The latter is currently used as a
tool in the New Zealand NCEA drama exam for secondary education. For ‘The Vir(tu)al Birds’ Stevenson has explored the domestic enclosure of the lounge as a space where televised broadcast imprints upon a private environment; where the individual receives social programming and political impressions. Projection back onto the didactic surface of the television screen attempts to subvert this power and authority of the TV, to create a space of interactivity, play, and creative inquiry.
